Potomac College has designed their curriculum to be grounded in the many realities of the workplace. Traditional classroom lectures are combined with participatory learning activities, as well as workplace projects. This allows students to integrate work responsibilities with the theory and practical applications that will help them reach their personal and professional goals.
Potomac College offers two types of programs. The first, Lower Division Support Courses, supply students with admission prerequisites for all majors. The second, Upper Division 18-Month Programs, allow students the chance to compete their Bachelor of Science degree in health information, technology, and cyber security in programs that combine theory and applied research.
Potomac recognizes that adults do not learn in the same way as younger students. Because of this fact, the College is committed to creating an environment that facilitates adult learning in a positive way. Programs at Potomac College feature participatory learning within a carefully crafted curriculum that includes student discussions, case studies, and team projects. In this environment, students are not just passive listeners but become active learners instead. The atmosphere has proven to be the most effective in enabling the student to master technical and professional skills, as well as develop the leadership and critical thinking skills necessary for success in today's competitive job market.
Potomac College admits students who are high school graduates or the equivalent, and who have at least 4 years of post high school work experience and a minimum of 24 semester credit hours of traditional prior college or non-traditional credits. The admissions process has two phases. First, applicants are admitted as matriculated students. Second, students are admitted into specific degree programs. The student and their needs determine whether these admissions happen together or at different times. For specific degree programs at Potomac College, applicants must also provide evidence of involvement in at least 20 hours of paid or unpaid work per week, computer literacy, and a completed interview with an academic advisor or an admissions representative.
In order to graduate from Potomac College, students must complete all required theory courses and applied research courses satisfactorily. They must earn a minimum of 39 credits in their major and a total of 123 credits to qualify for a Bachelor of Science degree. Students must also have a minimum 2.0 cumulative grade point average for all work competed at Potomac College. There are no time limits associated with transfer credits, and credits from overseas institutions are acceptable once an outside evaluator has approved them. Credit can be earned for life experience once it has been documented and evaluated by an accredited institution.
