The NewSchool of Architecture and Design's mission is to develop technically competent, aesthetically sensitive, socially responsible professionals who are prepared to create architecture and environments for a changing, global society. The school was founded in 1980 by the late Richard Welsh, whose vision was to bring education in architecture to the San Diego region that leads to a Bachelor of Architecture degree.
NewSchool has evolved over 23 years into a dynamic set of professional and non-professional programs in architecture and design. In 1990, an Associate of Arts Degree option was added to the already established B.Arch. Degree. In 1994, a first professional Master of Architecture Degree and, in1996, a non-professional Master of Science in Architecture Degree. Since 1991, NewSchool has be institutionally accredited, allowing for federal financial aid programs, and the B.Arch. program has been accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (N AAB) since 1998.
The NewSchool's philosophy centers around the idea of architectural internship, which allows students to work and go to school at the same time. It also allows students in mid-career to attend classes while keeping their current job. The classes are taught by practicing professional architects and designers, giving students an edge by exposing them to experienced instructors in design, technology, and other disciplines.
It is NewSchool's philosophy that a many different types of people can find fulfillment by studying architecture. Their programs attempt to develop artistic passion into professional excellence. The academic standards are particularly rigorous, programs follow a "learning by doing" protocol, and students are encouraged to intern as soon as their abilities and circumstances allow.
The demands of the architectural occupation are constantly in flux, and NewSchool makes every effort to keep up with these demands. The staff and faculty continuously evaluate and re-evaluate their educational objectives and goals, which include health, safety, and the welfare of the public. The study of architecture requires a lifelong commitment to learning and is considered an integrative profession. This integrative quality demands a certain type of mental flexibility in order to learn new disciplines and communicate effectively.
Graduates of NewSchool of Architecture and Design get assistance from career service personnel in resume and interview preparation, and the Career Service Center notifies students and graduates of current job openings. NewSchool also networks with local companies who may have job openings in the graduate's field, and the school sets up interviews for students and graduates. NewSchool encourages students to utilize all networking opportunities provided by the school.
