Founded in 1933 as Beckley College, Mountain State University (MSU) is a school of over 4,000 students located in Beckley, West Virginia. Mountain State University believes in the value of lifelong learning and the power of knowledge to transform lives.

MSU continually strives for innovative undergraduate and graduate programs that lead to opportunities for personal and professional success in a rapidly changing and technologically sophisticated world. MSU offers associate, bachelor, and master degree programs in arts and sciences, business, and health sciences. In total, MSU offers 70 different programs of study.

Mountain State University also has a School of Extended and Distance Education. This school provides many alternative methods for learning and earning university credit. Most of these options are available to campus-based students as well as those pursuing their studies off campus. Many of MSU's degree programs can be completed entirely through distance learning. This flexibility makes it easy for individuals with substantial work and life commitments to obtain the education they need to start a new career or further an existing career.

Mountain State University has a Program Participation Agreement with the US Department of Education for eligible students to receive Pell Grants and other federal aid (e.g., Direct Loans). Additional aid options open to qualifying students of MSU include grants, loans, scholarships, state aid, work/study programs, and Veterans Affairs (VA) benefits.
