The Edinburgh Business School (EBS), which is part of Heriot-Watt University, was founded in 1990. It has over 9,000 MBA students from over 150 countries. Over 6,500 students have graduated from Edinburgh since its inception. Heriot-Watt University, which is based in Edinburgh Scotland, received its Royal charter in 1966.

Many major companies have subsidized employee attendance of Edinburgh MBA programs, including Adobe Systems, Frito-Lay, Goodyear, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Johnson & Johnson, Levi Strauss & Co., Royal & Sun Alliance Canada, and Sun Microsystems.

Edinburgh takes an innovative, global, approach to the development of its course content. All courses are created from a global perspective to give a broader understanding of business issues in an international context. Over half of the courses are written by faculty who have done extensive research and taught in the UK and the US.

The Edinburgh Business School has a very flexible approach to their MBA program. The MBA program consists of nine courses. An individual must take seven core courses and an additional two elective courses. There are twenty available elective courses. To allow a student to be flexible with their studies, courses may be taken in any order. The core courses consist of: accounting, economics, finance, marketing, organizational behavior, project management, and strategic planning. The electives consist of: alliances and partnerships, competitive strategy, consumer behavior, corporate governance, decision-making techniques, derivatives, financial risk management, government, industry and privatization, human resource management, influence, international marketing, making strategies work, marketing channels, marketing research, mergers and acquisitions, negotiation, practical history of financial markets, quantitative methods, sales force management, services marketing, and strategic risk management.

The Edinburgh Business school MBA can be completed online, in self-study mode. Self-study combines specially designed learning texts with online interaction and web-based feedback. Through self-study, an individual may complete the degree at a pace that best suits their needs and circumstances. Most self-study students sit for three examinations per year. The average self-study student can complete the MBA program in three years. The program can be completed more quickly if the individual accelerates their self-study pace and examinations.

Online self-study allows an individual to profile themselves, provides interactive tutorials and downloadable simulations, and provides a web board to allow students to interact with Edinburgh Business School faculty. In addition, they provide "MyGroups", which enables individuals to contact other MBA students, and "The Watercooler", which provides a discussion board, links to student web sites, and links to other sites of interest.

Heriot-Watt University is approved by the United States Department of Education. This enables US students to apply for US government loans to help with educational expenses.

Heriot-Watt University is accredited by Royal Charter. Royal Charters are granted by the British Government to ensure that universities meet high academic standards. Heriot-Watt received its charter in 1966. Most countries, including the US and Canada, happily accept degrees awarded by accredited universities in Great Britain as the equivalent to their own.

The Edinburgh Business School has an MBA Alumni Club to help individuals to keep in touch with the business school and their fellow alumni. The Alumni club web site has a listing of events, spotlight and business feature articles, a directory, a listing of groups and a shop to purchase logo merchandise.

The Edinburgh Business School also has an innovative referral program that rewards graduates and alumni who refer individuals to the school who then go on to enroll in EBS' program. Rewards include free access to online publications or education books. Rewards are up to £75 in value.
