Bethel University was founded as a seminary in 1871. In 1914 it combined with a secondary academy to became a junior college. In 1947, a four-year liberal arts college was introduced, and in 2004 it was reorganized as Bethel University. Bethel University's main campus is located in Arden Hills, Minnesota. Arden Hills is a suburb of St. Paul, Minnesota's second largest city and state capital.

Bethel University's College of Adult and Professional Studies and Graduate School also conducts courses in eight other locations across the Twin Cities area. Bethel University's seminary has teaching centers in Arden Hills, San Diego, the Boston area, Philadelphia, New York City, and Metro D.C. Bethel serves a combined student population in excess of 5,500 students.

Bethel University is comprised of five schools: the College of Arts and Sciences, the Graduate School, the Bethel Seminary, the College of Adult and Professional Studies, and the School for Executive Leadership. These schools award certificates, bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees in more than 100 fields of study and prepare students for licensure in education and nursing.

Bethel University makes it easy for working adults, individuals who already have substantial work and life responsibilities, to obtain an education. Bethel University's College of Adult and Professional Studies offers accelerated degree programs for working adults. The College of Adult and Professional Studies offers evening and weekend classes that are held on the Bethel campus and at other convenient metro locations.
