Patient care technicians provide routine nursing care under the supervision of a physician or registered nurse. Patient care techs check in patients, get patient histories, check vital signs, setup charts, coordinate test procedures, assist with patient prep required before medical procedures, change bandages, and perform venipuncture. Other tasks include moving patients, keeping medical supplies fully in stock and ready for use, and patient education.
As patient care is a major responsibility, specialized training is required. Patient care technician jobs require the successful certification as a nursing assistant, and may come with other educational requirements as well.
