To become a nail technician, you typically need a state-certified license, and the first step in that process is attending a formal training program. You can find these at some high schools or at a public or private post-secondary vocational school. Coursework may include learning how to give a manicure, pedicure, polish nails, and apply nail extensions. You can also find additional training at salons, cosmetology schools, and industry trade shows, which you should take throughout your career to keep your skills fresh and to learn the latest trends.

A nail technician school may also help teach you people skills, even going so far as to include coursework in that area, since people skills are such a vital part of the job. After all, you need to be able to keep clients coming back to you. Licensing requirements vary from state to state, so you should research what your own state expects, but most entail a written exam and then possibly an oral or practical exam too. You traditionally should be be at least 16-years-old and have either a high school diploma or GED to become a nail technician.
