Why Should You Attend Hairstyling School?

To become a hairstylist, you typically need a state certified license, and to get that you traditionally need formal training at a state-licensed cosmetology school. Today, numerous private and public vocational schools provide cosmetology and hairstyling training.

Hairstyling training typically involve classes in shampooing, cutting, coloring, and hair design. Some cosmetologists may choose to learn additional skills, such as manicures, pedicures, facials, and makeup analysis. The more services you learn how to perform while at hairstyling school, the better your job options should be.

It generally takes about nine months to complete the requirements for an associate's degree or certificate, but you should continue to take courses in hair design throughout your career to stay on top of the latest trends. After you get your degree, you usually take a licensing exam that may include a written, oral, and practical skills test. Each state has its own requirements, however, so you should check on your own state's rules before starting school.

Hairstyling School: Why Become a Hairstylist?

Almost half of all hairstylists are self-employed and many of those own their own salon. You can also lease a chair from a salon's owner if you don't want the management responsibility of your own place but do want the freedom of self-employment. You should have plenty of opportunities as an entry level worker, but you usually need some experience before you can get a job at the top, highest paying salons.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, hairstylists earned a median annual wage of $23,140 in 2008.
