Nursing informatics systems are being installed in hospitals as a key part of a larger effort to reduce patient treatment errors. A nursing informatics specialist is typically a nurse that has been hired by a vendor of informatics systems to play a lead role in installing their systems in hospitals. The specialist must have strong nursing skills, strong communication skills, and an appetite for travel, as they may be travelling a very large percentage of the time.

Nursing informatics specialists work very independently, and must be able to rapidly integrate themselves, and their company's products, into the nursing staff of a hospital. When this job type first came into being, no specific formal training was required, but more and more companies are looking for nurses that have informatics training and certification, or will go through such a program.
