Forensic nurses perform a variety roles that include the gathering of evidence from victims of violent crime. This includes the review and examinstion of corpses, and rape victims. In addition, forensic nurses play a key role in treating victims of violent crime.
Forensic nurses must learn a variety of techniques for gathering evidence in a secure manner without contaminating it. They also must learn a wide range of tests that they can perform on the evidence, and how to draw conclusions from the available information. They must also be able to put together evidence that may be used in a court of law. Some forensic nurses obtain employment working in the penal system, or in other roles teaching people about the effects of violent crime, and how to avoid it.
