Dental hygienist schools will provide training on using dental equipment, taking x-rays, sterilization procedures, preparation of adhesives and anesthesia, cleaning teeth, and assisting dentists at work. Training for dental hygienist careers usually includes courses in hygiene, dental diseases and their treatment, fillings, caps, root canals, and all other aspects of dental care.

Once you complete your training, you will educate patients on dental hygiene, including the maintenance of proper diet, toothbrush selection, and how to use floss. Other duties will include taking x-rays, removing calculus, stains, and plaque from teeth, and assisting the dentist in diagnosing dental disease, applying cavity-preventive agents, and more. In some states, hygienists also administer anesthetics, work with filling materials, temporary fillings, periodontal dressings, and polish metal restorations.

The demand for people with dental hygienist training remains high, and continues to grow - the US Department of Labor projects that dental hygienists are projected to be one of the 30 fastest growing occupations.
