Boston Colleges And Schools

Boston, the capital of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, is Massachusetts' largest city, and one of the 25 largest cities in the United States. It is located in eastern Massachusetts, on Boston Harbor. Higher education is one of the major industries in both Massachusetts and Boston. Many of the nation's most prestigious colleges and universities are located in and around Boston. There are almost 40 schools located in Boston, ranging in size from less than 100 students to Boston University with almost 26,000 students and Northeastern University with almost 20,000 students. Just across the Charles River (made famous in the Standell's song "Dirty Water"), is Cambridge, home to 8 more schools including the nation's oldest, Harvard University. As with any major metropolitan area, Boston is a center of art, communication, culture, design, fine dining, government, history, nightlife, and industry. There is a lot to see and do to enhance your education and college experience.

For a student of colonial, revolutionary war, and early American history, there are few places that can rival Boston. The revolutionary war started outside of Boston in Lexington, Massachusetts, at the Old North Bridge. Several major revolutionary war events and battles took place in Boston, such as the Boston Tea Party, the Boston Massacre, and the Battle of Bunker Hill. A short ride north of Boston is Salem, Massachusetts, the site of the infamous Salem witch trials.

For those who want their college experience to include easy access to professional sports, Boston is home to some of the most famous and storied professional sports teams in the nation. The Boston Red Sox, who make their home at Fenway Park in Boston, were the winners of the first World Series, and several since, including the 2004 World Series, breaking the 86-year "curse of the Bambino". The Boston Celtics have won more NBA championships than any other NBA team. The New England Patriots, in nearby Foxboro, are winners of three of the last four Super Bowls. Even the Boston Bruins have several Stanley Cup Trophies to their credit. SportingNews ranked Boston as the "Best Sports City" for 2004.
