Baton Rouge Colleges And Schools
Baton Rouge, the capital of the State of Louisiana, is a city of almost 230,000 people, located about an hour and twenty five minutes northwest of New Orleans in "plantation country". (Note: Baton Rouge's population has grown rapidly in 2005 as more people relocating from New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina have moved to Baton Rouge than any other city.) There are 25 schools located in Baton Rouge, ranging in size from less than 100 students, to Louisiana State University with almost 30,000 students. As with any major metropolitan area, Baton Rouge is a center of art, communication, culture, design, fine dining, history, nightlife, and industry. Baton Rouge is also an easy day-trip to New Orleans and all of the arts, culture, history, and nightlife that it has to offer. There is a lot to see and do to enhance your education and college experience.
A few things of unique interest in Baton Rouge include:
- The tallest state capital building in the United States
- Baton Rouge is home to a Gothic Revival castle, built in 1849, that Mark Twain called "the ugliest building on the Mississippi river"
- Baton Rouge Mardi Gras
- U.S.S. Kidd and the Nautical Historic Center
- BREC's Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center
- Alligator Bayou in nearby Prairieville
As is true of most of Louisiana, Baton Rouge provides a melange of musical traditions, including jazz, blues, rock and roll, Cajun, gospel, country, classical, and Zydeco. There is something for every listening ear in Baton Rouge.
For those who want their college experience to include easy access to professional sports, nearby New Orleans has two professional sports teams: the NFL's New Orleans Saints, and the NBA's New Orleans Hornets. New Orleans is also home to college football's Sugar Bowl and New Orleans Bowl.
Baton Rouge has a semi-tropical climate, making it an ideal location for year-round outdoor activities.
