The New Jersey Department of Education works with teachers with college education degrees as well as those without formal post-graduate teaching certifications and formal classroom teaching components. That means, if you hold an undergrad degree, there are options for completing the requirements while you gain practical experience in the classroom.

Getting Certified as a Teacher in Jersey with a Certificate of Eligibility (CE)

One of the quickest routes to getting certified as a teacher in New Jersey is to enroll in a formal teacher prep program that includes student teaching. The state and candidate determine the path of entry via a Certificate of Eligibility (CE), or the Certificate of Eligibility with Advanced Standing (CEAS). The CE suits individuals who may hold a degree but have not completed a formal teacher prep program in college. The CEAS is appropriate for a candidate who neither holds a NJ Standard certificate nor has completed a year of full-time teaching outside NJ with a valid out-of-state teaching certificate.

Upon completion of a formal, state-approved teacher prep program with classroom experience, the candidate becomes eligible for a permanent New Jersey Standard Instructional Certification. The cost for the permanent certificate is $170.
